That Toy Is Bleeding?

NOTE - * The bunny in this post is NOT the bunny pictured.  The bunny pictured is Tansy who is just fine and lounging in his carpeted bedroom munching on orchard grass with his bunny buddy Kiwi. *

Dhali likes to carry toys around in his mouth.  He always tries to take a toy outside or bring one inside.  I try to stop him taking them in and out, because they get wet and sandy outside.
Last night I grabbed a toy out of his mouth as he was coming back inside.  It was dark.  The toy was furry.  The toy was bleeding!!
And Dhali was NOT giving it up.  Uh uh, no way.  It was his toy.

Yup.  It was a dead bunny.  I tricked him into dropping it in the grass - waving a kleenex around in front of him.  Then I grabbed both dogs and put them inside.  Now I had to find the bunny in the dark!  Found a flashlight and pushed my way outside again past two very determined dogs - they wanted their prize back!

It was freshly killed and a small teenager bunny.  I think Catty probably caught and killed it and then the dogs stole it.  Or she might have abandoned it and they just found it, she's done that before too.  I don't think Dhali actually killed it, but that is a possibility too, I guess.  More likely Catty though, because she's always killing little birds, mice and bunnies.

Yuck.  So gross.  Bad enough to find a dead bunny, but to grab it in the dark when I though it was a toy?  Ewww!!!!!

It's weird, but Catty will sleep next to the pet bunnies and then go outside and kill a wild bunny.

"Hey, I guy's gotta try!"

My Best Bunny

Tibby's favorite spot in the vacation house.
She started to carry this bunny around and playing with it like crazy - shaking it around and bringing it to me to play tug and fetch.
It's very cute!
Everything Tibby does is cute!

The Bunny Warning

It's that time of year again.  Tansy's gotcha month.
I love my bunny boyz, but they are NOT a good pet for everyone.  They take a lot of work and are extremely messy.

They went outside into the 'bunny yard' for the first time this week.  Yummy green grass!  Taking your bunny outside is NOT recommended, because there are a million nasty things they can get from the grass and from mosquitoes or flies.  They love it though and I'm probably a bad owner, because I also let Catty go outside.  Inside = safe, but sad.  Outside = danger, but happy.  They only get one life, so I would like them to be happy.

Tansy is the bunny that started it all.  I bought him at the feed store when he was a little itty bitty baby.  I thought he was a girl for the longest time.  Of course, when he started 'courting' me I realized he was a boy.  I already had an appointment to have him spayed, so the vet just changed it to a neuter!
Both of the boyz are neutered.  If they weren't they wouldn't be able to live together OR in my house.  Rabbits are very territorial.
They spray.  They bite.  They rip up carpet, walls and dig, dig, dig.
But when they are neutered or spayed all that territorial behavior disappears and you have the sweet bunny that everyone imagines they will have.
Well, almost.
They are still animals with attitude.

I honestly sometimes think they would make better agility candidates than Tibby!  I thought about getting into Rabbit Hopping before I got Tibby.  They have a better recall that Tibby.  They are extremely food motivated.

Tansy and Kiwi have their own room in my house.  People are always surprised at this, but in my opinion it's so much easier to keep their mess contained in one room.  When I say mess I mean - DUST from their hay and FUR from Kiwi who sheds like a maniac.
Tansy's my little golden boy and he doesn't shed - much.

They are 100% litter boxed trained.  In fact, I had them outside for 3 hours and the first thing they did, when they got back to their room,  was hop in their litter box and pee.  And pee.  And pee.  They had been holding it for a LONG time!  LOL!!  I think that is amazing.  They will NOT go potty any where other than their litter box.  Even if they are outside.

Pet rabbits are European rabbits.  They are not like the rabbits you see running around outside in the forest.  Unless you live in Europe I guess!

Kiwi is my rescue rabbit.  I got him from the humane society.  In August.  So he was most likely a discarded Easter bunny.  Sad.  But not surprising.  People are just not prepared for the raging (scary) hormones of a mature rabbit.  Trust me they are not cuddly or sweet when they have their bits.
I adopted Kiwi as a friend for Tansy.  They LOVE each other.  Rabbits are social creatures and they need another bunny to love.  Tansy and Kiwi cuddle together and groom each other.  They are very cute.

90% of my boyz diet is dried hay/grass.  9% is fresh vegetables.  1% or less is alfalfa pellets.  Some people might say there should be more vegetables and less hay, but my boyz haven't had any problems with their teeth or intestinal blockages.  Which are problems that can happen if your bunny is eating the wrong food (pellets) or too much soft food (vegetables).  Their teeth grow constantly for their entire life and they need the grass/hay to grind their teeth down.  OR their teeth will grow into their jaws and cause abscesses.

So to re-cap.
Bunnies:  Cute and sweet, but a whole ton of work.

Look another bunny!  They're multiplying!

Tibby had fun watching them.

"Who me?  I'm not doing anything.  This dirt?  I don't know where it came from."

"I was framed!"

Tibby, Bunnies and Green

I have been putting the bunnies out in their x-pen for a few hours every day.  The first few times Tibby was crazy, because she thinks the bunnies are "SO WONDERFUL!!!".  Possibly to eat.  Maybe to just play with.  We will never know.  Now Tibby has calmed down a lot.  It's fun to be outside with the whole family!

Tansy Gotcha Day

Today is Tansy's Gotcha Day!
I have had the little guy for 1 year.
This time last year I was going into the feed store a couple of times a week, just to look at the bunnies.  I kept telling myself,  "You don't need a bunny.  You're just looking, but you don't need a bunny."  Yeah.  Right.
So every week I would go in to the feed store and every week the bunnies would be sold out.  Week after week after week.  Then one week there were 2 white bunnies with red eyes.  But I didn't want to separate the little bunnies.  I also didn't want a Red Eyed White (AT ALL!!).  Hmmmm, and Kiwi?  Yeah.  Never say you will never do/have/be something.  Kiwi is the sweetest REW ever!
Back to Tansy.
The next week there was one tiny brown bunny in the bin.  It was all by itself.  It was flopped over on its side watching the people go by.  I put my hand into the bin and it crawled right into my hand and sat there.  I picked it up and it sat there.  I really wanted this bunny!!!
But I didn't buy it.
I left and did some errands.  If the bunny was still there when I went back - it was meant to be.  If he wasn't there?  It wasn't meant to be.
It was still there!!!
You might notice that I keep calling him an 'it'.  Baby bunnies are very hard to sex.  Tansy was in the 'Female' bin when I bought him.  I couldn't see any male signs until a couple of days before he was ready to be spayed.  Even then I wasn't positive.  When I dropped him off to be spayed I told the vet,  "I think Tansy might be a boy.  So maybe it will be a neuter?"
That's why Tansy has a 'girl' name.
Too bad, because I have a really good boy name that I want to use someday.
I couldn't use it on Kiwi, because obviously as a New Zealand White he had to be called Kiwi!
Finding out Tansy was a boy was very hard.  I had all sorts of pink toys, blankets and pillows for him.  I had thought of him as a girl for 3 months.  I actually called him 'my sweet little girl' for those 3 months!!!
Poor Tansy. :P
Now some pictures!

Sleeping.

Catty and Tansy.

Big boy resting.

Garden bunny!

Catty and Tansy pre-friends.  I was afraid to let them be together, because Catty has killed wild rabbits before.  I went on vacation and the pet sitter came home one day to find Catty and Tansy chilling on the couch together.  I guess they decided that they wanted to be friends.

When I still thought he was a she.

Baby Tansy with his stuffed bunny buddy.

Really baby Tansy.
See why I fell in LoVe with him?!?

Sleeping in my arms.

Ittle wittle baby Tansy.
